Since the end of her big Tour, Emiliana is taking a break. We've taken a moment with her to see what's going on in her world, about what's coming next, her musical projects, especially about the next album, and others things. Have a good read!
Hi Emiliana, thanks for taking some time to answer a few questions, how are you?
Really really good thank you.
Let's take a step back in time. You went on tour during one year and a half and we had a feeling "Me and Armini" was really literally made for the live stage, even more than the previous album. Do you feel the same way?
It wasn't intentionally made for stage but it was definitely easier to perform as it had more tempo changes where "Fisherman's Woman" did not. It was a lot of fun. Though now I cant even play one song as I'm so tired of them, after having played them for so long haha!
We also felt that "Me and Armini" was a crossroad in your music carreer, as well as the recognition you received for it. "Jungle Drum" was a massive hit in Germany, where it was number 1 for 8 weeks, and playing live at the Olympia was also one of those major things that shows how popular the album was. Do you agree with that?
Playing at The Olympia was one of the best things that happened to me in my carreer. I will never forget how brilliant it was play for everyone, and the Olympia was the cherry on the cake. That is always a good thing.
Also, Germany went a little mad it was an interesting time. Very different from what I'm used to and also different were asked of me. It was interesting to have a little peak into that world and then retrieve back to my own. Playing in germany was amazing through and through... Always has been.
It was great to see people who went there only for the song "Jungle Drum" and were so surprised and taken aback by the other songs. Some had never seen a band play live, only pop vocal groups with backing tracks, so it was a treat to see their faces when watching Siggi the drummer playing the cymbals and glockenspiel with a violin bow.
To go back to the 2008-2010 tour, is a Live DVD in the works? Would you like to make one, one day?
No, it doesnt look like there is one in the making. It seems to have gone all wrong, very sadly. I would love to, one day, it seems crazy not to have done one already.
Any funny anecdot from the tour?
Being sick and very very tired in the end, and never even thinking I might me pregnant. I cant look at this sweater that I wore at the time without it making me feel sick. Oh and cold soba noodles for dinner were the worst thing ever...
All the drama that went through my head. like I had worms, or something was wrong, and that I was dying, all but that I might be pregnant.
We found out recently that you were pregnant, but it also seems that you've been working on a new album. Do theses wonderful changes in your life influence your work in a different way, or the song writing?
I was told that this is the time, where I would be the most creative, that the songs would just roll out of me, that I wouldn't be able to stop it.
Then I waited... tumbleweeds... all it has done is completely stun me. What can you say to this!
I'm having my own big bang happening inside me, I'm now in this ever expanding babies universe. I am his gate to this parallel world which is just made for him. It blows my mind so I'm wordless, I'm like a tree in a summer breeze and the wind whistles in my head... There is nothing going on in there haha!
So as you can imagine not a lot of songs have been created although the few ones I have indeed started, I'm very happy with. I'm very surprised by them, they are far from being the songs I expected to write pregnant.
Until now, we have had three albums very different from one another, do you think the fourth album will be again a different one as well?
It looks like it's going to be yes. I never experience them as so different from each other. There are a few songs that brake the records up and I also like a different production approaches each time. That is just something that happens naturally though and so we go with it, there is nothing else to do but that.
Will Dan Carey produce this new album?
I don't know. We never really talk about it. We seem to do very solid demos which then end on the record. We work like a band so... who knows. Maybe we will bring someone in to just try something different… Then again we always say that.
Is there a release date or is it hypothetical?
No date yet, I'm hoping Fall next year or early 2012, I just have to see what kind of baby comes along. If he's easy, no problem, and we'll go on tour together, but if it looks to be a little more difficult, we'll see. As long as it is a happy healthy baby, everything is possible, I just have to go with it like everything else.
Iceland has been in the news for a few weeks now, especially with the stubborn volcano. Betwen the difficult economical situation and the volcano, times are pretty hard in your country, what do you think of all this?
Yes, and the news reporting has not helped at all, it created hysteria. One picture was of someone in the middle of the ash fall by the glacier with a gas mask. Underneath, it said it was in Reykjavík, and so on and so forth. It wasnt there at all. My family was getting letters from friends in America offering them to stay whilst it was going on. I can only imagine how the news was reported in the U.S.. They are exceptionally good in hysteria. I was getting all these worried letters from friends. It was quite funny.
Only the area around the volcano was affected, no one died luckily and everywhere else life just went on as normal. It has had a devastating effect on tourism this summer, as people cancelled coming over, and the very thing that was supposed to be a massive help to the economy was stopped right away by the volcano situation.
The great thing is that the Icelanders made a video to show people that all is well over there, and it is. They have used "Jungle Drum" as the song for the video. I'm very happy about it. And last but not least, can you share with us some of the artists you're listening to at the moment?
I bought some records in Iceland the day before yesterday. A classical record I love by Daniel Bjarnason, "Processions". I really love this record and very much recommend it. Then Sin Fang Bous, "Clangour". It's a two year old record, I never knew about it and am really glad I do now.
