The year 2006 is ending and it will soon be two years that Emilana's wonderful album "Fisherman's woman" was realeased. After one year spent on tour, with a lot of gigs, Emiliana will finally have time to take a break, and maybe work on a future album. And that's exactly what most of the fans wonder about, the future album ! So what better way to know, than asking Emiliana herself?
Hi Emiliana! How are you ?
Emiliana Torrini : I'm very well thank you.
I won't lie by saying a lot of your fans wonder about a future album next year. I'll be the spokesman for everybody and ask, album or no album ? Do you have any ideas for your next record or have you written some of it already ?
I have no idea. I really hope so. In the latest it would be in the end of next year or the start of 2008. I dont know. I have written an albums worth of songs but only like 3 maybe 4 of them and woudnt put the other ones out. So I keep going.
On january 25th, it will be two years that Fisherman's Woman was realeased. So what did it bring to you ?
I have been touring for most of it as I started playing the record long before it came out. It was very scary as the record was very different from littos (Love In The Time Of Science) so it was like starting again. I had no idea if the "vintage" fans would like it or not or if we would start attracting new listeners.. or not. There seems to have been a good mixture of the two. That was very moving for me after 5 years of being away. Also going to new places like japan. my dream country ! We also toured australia wich was wonderful and met some brilliant people so all was good.
And the shows ? Do you have a favorite place for gigs ? Like this last festival at the Leigo Lake in Estonia. How does it feel to sing "on" a lake ?
The lake lego festival was the most brilliant I have ever been to. We arrived in the night so couldnt really see the surroundings. We stayed in big stone farmhouses that had fire burning all night as well as outside there were hundreds of bonfires scattered around. In the morning I looked out the window and the lake lay there in the smokey mist with a beautiful wooden stage parked on it. The gig was fun but it was more fun to watch the other bands. We watched kimmo on the big lake that night. It was magical. Again bonfires surrounded the area and candles floated on the lake and paperbag kandles flew in the air. When all that beauty was going on a meteorite shower filled the sky. Afterwards we stayed in one of the houses and drank till early mornings with the family that ownes the land and festival. And what a family...Possibly one of the most inspiring people I have ever met. The husband made those lakes you know. They are his pride and joy. Understandably. I was very upset when we left as i just wanted to stay there always. Anyway I can go on and on about it ! Cant wait to go again...
Shall we have the luck to see you on TV or in a show before the end of the year ?
I am doing one show in portugal, porto on the 25th of November. That will be the last one... I keep saying that but I couldnt say no. I played in Portugal once and that was with the thievery corporation so I just wanted to go there again but play the record, although, I have to say, it will have to be the last one till the next record comes out as I have to have a break from it now.
Christmas and the New Year's days are coming fast. Do you have any ideas of what you'll do ? For my part, every year it's like, you know, "Gosh, only three days to go and I still don't know what to do !", I guess you can imagine the scene. How does it work for you ?
I am a complete christmas maniac. I finish all christmas presents throughout the year so I can just spend december on long walks. Bake cakes, make liquors and chocolates, go to gigs and the theater, dance, read, eat and meet friends. Then of course over decorate everything! I will spend this Christmas with my 5 girlfriends, and we are cooking a hell of a lot of crayfish and I have lovely neighbours from eastern europe that often have big beautiful bonfires in the garden (it is a tiny garden in the middle of the city. dont know how they do it) and everytime I ask if I can come and sit with them. And they let me.. So i might talk to them and ask them to light up...Bonfires are the best.
One last question, and a music one, what artist and album are you listening at the moment ?
I just finished over-listening to the Bats for Lashes album. And I have this craze for Paul MaCartneys song "Temporary secretary". It is one of my getting-ready party songs. and I am getting that rock flutter again though, and I always welcome it. I'm also going to a lot of rock gigs right now...
Well, Thanks very much Emiliana, I wish you a merry christmas.
Well, have a very good christmas and New Year eve. Wish you well ! And Thank you.
